come on in

where expression equals existence

welcome to everything sar

I'll do my best to not make this an 'about me' page. Instead, this is a room where you get a glimpse into why I create, what I like to explore, and some a the tiny moments that shape my work.

Thank you for stopping by.

why do I express?

We exist as an expression of the Earth. We are the soil she allows us to borrow. We are the breath that she recycles. We are the water that she filters. We are the Earth that one day stood up and observed itself.

Expression is the embodiment of existence. I practice existence through creating. Finding peace in my mind as my fingers touch the tangible. I express to let go. I feel deep, and putting my imagination, my thoughts, my desires, and my emotions to paper reminds me I am alive.

I express to remember. To be remembered by others. To never forget myself. Time will pass and memories with become fuzzy. Stories will be over-exaggerated and tall tales will be spun. But if I remember to express, to create, to put pen to paper, I am giving a chance for every version of myself to live their moment to the fullest.

Be strict with yourself and tolerant of others.

I grew up in Upstate New York along the Mohawk River in a small village nestled in the belly of a valley surrounded by dairy farms, maple trees, apple orchards, and small-town school rivals. I was forever wishing for more throughout my teens, never realizing all that I had until I left it behind.

I discovered many things throughout my youth and well into my twenties. I was the typical small-town jock who drove a 96' Mustang GT to school in practice. I aced classes and chased money. I pictured life anywhere but where I grew up. College was a technical institute in the great arctic north of New York. After graduation, I kept on the path of chasing a dollar and worked as a project engineer. The grind caught up. The burnout was felt in my fingers. I forgot what it was like to feel. Feel like anything but a robot.

I learned something. Less Expecting, More Accepting. And that idea started with accepting myself. It began with my covering my fingers in paint and smearing them across a canvas. I learned that existence is incomplete without expression. So express, I did. I expressed myself into an apartment. I expressed myself into ‌owning a dog. I expressed myself so hard that my life partner and I dated new people together. And one of those people, we traveled the country with, in a bus I converted myself - with the money I received from selling the ol' Mustang from high school. I expressed myself into opening an art and yoga studio. I expressed myself into buying a house in the very town I swore I would never love. And now, I've expressed myself into becoming a father-to-be. A Papa to our very own little human. To guide and to accept whatever version of expression they choose.

Yet, after all of that, I still struggle with confidence. With convincing myself that I am everything I wished to be. I struggle with not falling victim to imposter syndrome. I have to remind myself daily that I am an Artist, an Author, and a Poet.

I am Sar.

the creative space

My studio needs to be adaptable. From planning monthly letter clubs, traditional drawings and digital ones, cutting collages, bookbinding, wood burning, and planning new construction builds, to gaming and reading, watching anime and staring out the window - my desk needs to feel free of restrictions and rules.

Today you'll probably find, love letters sent and received, a few books on stoicism and Japanese mindsets, magazine clippings (a few from Playboys - of course), ACEOs almost done, a thesaurus, and scrap papers I tell myself I'll use one day, but most likely won't.

Oh, and index cards filled with random ideas as they pop into my mind.

Sar Philosophy

I am fortunate. I am healthy. I am not alone. This is a privilege. Philosophy is a privilege. I am lucky enough to have time. I can ponder on the things outside of survival. This does not mean I am not without hardships nor does it imply that my youth wasn't full of sharp edges. What it does mean is this - I made it out okay. And now, I can reflect.

People deserve to be seen. They deserve to be heard. There is a difference between being alone and being lonely. So, if by me expressing and sharing my art reaches someone to make them feel less lonely, I think it would be selfish of me to stop. To keep my expression to myself. To hide away my existence. It was poetry at the age of fourteen that saved me. It was live music that help me feel.

Art needs to be accessible. There are people out there that don't know it can be. Art is not for the elite. It isn't something that only the "talented" can do. Like I said, I have time now. When once I didn't. When once, I thought being creative was for the rich. It is not. It is for human. It is for the soul. It is expression. It is the the very truth of our existence. Proof that we are here and we are listening and living and experiencing this extremely rare thing call, a human BEING.
